What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?
Any dental problem requiring immediate attention is considered a dental emergency. Some are obvious, such as knocked-out teeth or severe tooth pain. In general, a dental emergency is a situation requiring emergency dental care services to alleviate pain, control an infection, save a tooth, or stop severe bleeding.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency Situation
If you or a loved one have a dental emergency, you should immediately call your trusted team at Dentist of Lubbock. We’re happy to offer same-day appointments to ensure you get the prompt care you need. If you experience a dental emergency outside of our office hours, please call our emergency number. Our emergency dentist will provide you with guidance on how to best handle the situation.
If, at any time, you experience a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 for assistance or have a friend or family member drive you to the nearest emergency room.
Common Dental Emergencies
Lost Tooth: Losing a tooth can be alarming. It can happen due to many reasons, including traumatic injuries, periodontal (gum) disease, or other dental issues. If you lose a tooth, it’s important to call our dental office for an appointment right away.
Knocked-Out Tooth: If you accidentally knock out one of your teeth, pick it up by its crown without touching its root and rinse it gently in milk. Do not rinse the tooth in water. Try to return the tooth to its socket and place gentle pressure to keep it in place. If that is not possible, place it in a cup of milk and bring it with you to your emergency appointment. The sooner you get emergency treatment, the higher your chances of saving the tooth.
Fractured, Chipped, or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and place a cold compress on your face to reduce swelling. Collect any pieces of the affected tooth and bring them to your emergency appointment.
Swelling of the Face: Swelling around the face, mouth, or gums can be a sign of a serious infection and will need immediate care. Make sure to contact us immediately for an emergency appointment.
Toothache: Dental pain can be excruciating and may indicate a serious problem. Place a cold compress, take over-the-counter pain medication for symptom relief, and contact our office for emergency dental care.
Severe Bleeding: If you have bleeding from the mouth, gentle pressure can help. If you can’t control the bleeding, call 911 or head to your nearest hospital emergency room for assistance.
