When Should Your Child First See a Dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the first oral health checkup should occur when the baby teeth start to emerge and no later than the first birthday. While that may seem too soon, early dental care is essential to ensure your child’s teeth develop the way they should. Baby teeth start emerging around six months, so make sure the first dental visit isn’t far behind.

The Importance of Caring for Baby Teeth

It’s a common misconception that caring for baby teeth is not necessary since they will eventually fall out. However, keeping baby teeth healthy is vital for a child’s future dental health. These tiny pearly whites act as space holders for the incoming permanent teeth and guide them to erupt in the correct position. They are the framework around which adult teeth develop.

Losing a baby tooth early can affect your child’s self-esteem and confidence. It can also interfere with speech development, make it hard to chew and maintain proper nutrition, and impact your child’s oral health. A gap in your child’s smile can cause the neighboring teeth to shift out of alignment, leading to orthodontic concerns. Caring for your child’s teeth right from the start will set the stage for a lifetime of good oral health.

Pediatric Dental Exams and Cleanings

We’ll start with a thorough evaluation of your child’s teeth, jaws, oral tissues, and overall development. We will recommend preventive or restorative dental services, as necessary, to keep your child’s smile healthy and pain-free. Next is a professional dental cleaning, which involves removing plaque and tartar deposits from the teeth and gums, flossing to remove any remaining debris, and polishing those pearly whites. We’ll also demonstrate proper oral hygiene habits for long-term healthy smiles.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a mineral known for its ability to strengthen the teeth and lower the risk of cavities. It also helps to remineralize weak tooth enamel, repairing the early stages of tooth decay. Fluoride treatments are considered one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent tooth decay and cavities.

Dental Sealants

The chewing surfaces of the molars have pits and grooves that trap plaque and food particles, increasing the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Dental sealants are clear, protective shields we paint onto the molars to keep bacteria and debris from accumulating. Studies show that sealants significantly lower the risk of cavities.

Orthodontic Evaluations

According to the American Association of Orthodontics, children should have orthodontic evaluations by age 7. Many developmental concerns can be identified and corrected during this stage, preventing them from becoming more complex problems down the road. Our board-certified orthodontist will make recommendations based on your child’s unique needs.
